Evangeline Lilly Quits Hollywood Before Hollywood Quits Evangeline Lilly

Evangeline Lilly announced on Instagram yesterday that she is retiring from acting. “Stepping away from what seems like the obvious choice (wealth and fame) can feel scary at times,” she wrote. “But stepping into your dharma replaces the fear with fulfillment. I might return to Hollywood one day, but, for now, this is where I belong. A new season has arrived, and I AM READY…and I AM HAPPY.”

When she says she’s stepping into her “dharma,” is she referring to the Hindu concept or the research organization from Lost? Or both?

With all due respect to Lilly — who has had a successful career spanning her years on Lost, her role in The Hobbit movies, and a decade of playing Wasp in the Ant-Man movies — she hasn’t had much of a career outside of the MCU over the last decade (she has one live-action film to her name, a VOD indie with Jason Sudeikis). It’s less a retirement and more of an acknowledgment that her career is on the schneid.

I suspect her dearth of roles has more to do with her personal views than her acting ability. Lilly is an outspoken anti-vaxxer — she’s “pro-choice” when it comes to both vaccines and abortion — and she raised a ruckus during the height of the pandemic when she basically said that her life was “#businessasusual,” which came off as callous given the number of people dying around that time. She also attended the same anti-vax rally where RFK, Jr. compared mandatory vaccines to the Holocaust.

She’s a bit on the woo-woo side, and maybe she’s “retiring” to devote her time to RFK, Jr’s. Campaign.
