For as long as Emma Stone has been in the eye of the paparazzi, she has enjoyed f*cking with those paparazzi. She’s made a reputation for skillfully and hilariously owning the people trying to make money off a constant invasion of her personal space. Remember these?
Stone has proven herself to be crazy adept at media maneuvering. Take her relationship with Andrew Garfield, for example. They never really hid their relationship, but they also never talked about it.
See, I never talk about this stuff for this exact reason—because it’s all so speculative and baseless. Once you start responding—once you’re like, ‘No, that’s not true’—then they’re like, ‘Well, if we push enough, we’ll get a comment, so let’s see what else we can make up.’ I understand the interest in it completely, because I’ve had it, too. But it’s so special to me that it never feels good to talk about, so I just continually don’t talk about it.
And remember after all of the Andrew Garfield breakup rumors had solidified, how she left their shared publicist’s office carrying this bag with his name on it?
This was the point at which Emma Stone seemed to just be straight-up trolling us, manufacturing intrigue for nothing but the sake of making us crazy with curiosity. For someone so very aware of the paparazzi, it seemed impossible that she wasn’t messing with us in some way. And it turns out, that’s exactly what she was doing.
When I picked up the bag, I was like, ‘This is kind of funny if there are any [paparazzi] out there.’ There’s probably some rebelliousness that comes out in me after all these stories and people texting you for weeks about something that, for the most part, is not true. But even when it’s false, I would rather just let it be false.Good for you, Emma Stone. You keep trolling us, we’ll keep loving you. That’s the deal we seem to have come up with.
