Eminem dropped a surprise new album, titled Music to Be Murdered By. Oh, the edge. Actually, it’s a Hitchcock reference. The famous director released his own LP with that title and the pose Mr. Mathers is copying on his cover. To be fair, he did actually credit Hitchcock for the homage.

This is Eminem’s 11th studio album and his first since 2018’s Kamikaze, a.k.a. the one with the cover ‘homaging’ Licensed to Ill, a.k.a. the one with the song from Venom on it. Remember that? Yikes. So, how is the former first man of white boy rap staying relevant in the age of Lizzo, Kendrick, and Soundcloud rap? Not well!

Music To be Murdered By features a song called ‘Unaccommodating’, in which the star brags about his impact on music. It contains this lyric:

I’m contemplating yelling ‘bombs away’ on the game // Like I’m outside of an Ariana Grande concert waiting.

*sigh*

Oh Marshall, you really tried to be edgy here, didn’t you?

For those of you who don’t know, he’s referencing the May 2017 bombing that took place at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, which killed 22 people and injured hundreds more. Grande became a major face of the incident and organized a benefit concert to raise funds for the victims. Less than three years on, Manchester is still recovering from the attack and Grande has spoken candidly about her own trauma in the aftermath.

This is the exact kind of shock tactic that Eminem has thrived on throughout his career. It’s partly how he became famous, after all. Yet even at his most tasteless in his early years, he had some panache and humor in his corner. His targets were mixed but when he was firing on all cylinders, you got the sense that he at least had something to say and a real point to make when calling out someone. This? He’s not even trying. He’s a 47-year-old man trying to garner headlines of wide-eyed shock by targeting a woman almost half his age and a horrifying moment in British history.

The rhyme itself is also just sh*t. His flow is off, there’s no wit here, and it doesn’t even make a whole lot of sense. It’s like watching a YouTube commenter get angry at the new Wonder Woman trailer. The ‘RU Triggured!?11’ vibes are real. It’s made all the sh*ttier because Mathers did help to raise a lot of money for the victims of the Manchester bombing. Now that just feels like he was covering his a** for crap like this.
