Ellen Page Just Dragged Chris Pratt Over His Homophobic Church, Hot Damn!

It’s no secret that Chris Pratt has made it a point to cram his faith into his public persona as much as possible in 2019. Just the other day, he couldn’t even answer a simple question about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 without dropping a Bible reference. And while it’s easy to write off his proselytizing as harmless, Pratt is heavily promoting a flavor of Evangelical Christianity that predominantly leans Right, and in the process, rains all kinds of damage onto the heads of LGBTQ Americans, school kids who don’t want to get shot in the middle of algebra class, and women who’d like control over their own uterus. For example, the debate over “late-term abortions” — a deceptively asshole term if there ever was one — didn’t just materialize out of thin air.

Unfortunately, no one in Hollywood has publicly called out Pratt on his bullshit until now. Here’s Ellen Page stepping right the hell up and dragging Stephen Colbert for skipping right over the fact that Pratt attends the “infamously anti-LGBTQ” Hillsong church.

And just in case you think Page is out of line, here are Hillsong’s views on homosexuality.

Via IndieWire:

The actor’s church, Hillsong, has made headlines for not “affirming” the LGBTQ lifestyle. In a statement released in August 2015, Hillsong global pastor Brian Houston said he “holds to traditional Christian thought on gay lifestyles and gay marriage” and that “God’s word is clear that marriage is between a man and a woman.”

“Hillsong Church welcomes ALL people but does not affirm all lifestyles,” the statement reads. “Put clearly, we do not affirm a gay lifestyle and because of this we do not knowingly have actively gay people in positions of leadership, either paid or unpaid. I recognise this one statement alone is upsetting to people on both sides of this discussion, which points to the complexity of the issue for churches all over the world.”

Hi, that’s homophobia. But, wait, there’s more. Hillsong also has a history of endorsing gay conversion therapy, which is a practice so f*cked up that even Republicans have abandoned it. Granted, the church has distanced itself from conversation therapy in recent years, it still maintains the kind, loving Christian stance of “You people are an abomination, but you’re gladly welcome to sit in our pews and give us money. K thanks!”

For the record, this stance is harmful, political violence that destroys lives. So every time Chris Pratt goes, “Big ups to JC for another LEGO movie,” and makes others think his success comes from his faith, he’s pushing people into the arms of right-wing evangelicalism.

Unfortunately, he’s considered one of the “nicest” celebrities in Hollywood and stars in a beloved Marvel franchise, so it’s way too easy for people to say, “Oh, he’s not hurting anybody.” Which is naturally what happened in Ellen Page’s mentions.

Yes. Yes, it does.

You’re right. They just encourage legislation that denies LGBT Americans basic human rights like marrying who they love, not being fired just for existing, or visiting a partner in the hospital. Turns out there are other ways to ruin a person’s life besides murder. Surprise!

Telling people that someone’s sexuality angers their supernatural creator who demands obedience is how things like Matthew Shepard happens, JASON. (That’s right. I cracked your code. REPENT.)

Cool. Evangelicals who vote against gay rights and abortion can go first.

This has been another installment of Chris Pratt is the Worst Chris. See you next time.
