Ellen DeGeneres Lays Smack Down On Homophobic Pastor's Rant
Ellen DeGeneres likes to consider herself first and foremost an entertainer. But the fact that she hosts her wildly popular talk show The Ellen DeGeneres Show while lesbian has one fired up pastor decrying her “gay agenda” in the Christian Post (via The Wrap).
In his op-ed “Are You Aware of the Avalanche of Gay Programming Assaulting Your Home?,” Larry Tomczak ties in everything from Foxcatcher’s suggested subtext to Michael Sam having the audacity to kiss his boyfriend in a moment of celebration, to the new series Empire daring to have a gay character. He claims, “We are being bombarded!” Ellen is just one of his bullet points in a list that on our site would be marking how far television in particular has come in terms of representation of LGBT characters. But of this list of supposed corrupters of youth, Ellen’s the first to speak out.
DeGeneres kicked off by re-asserting she usually avoids reading press about herself, but felt the need to respond because of lines like this one “Ellen DeGeneres celebrates her lesbianism and “marriage” in between appearances of stars like Taylor Swift to attract young girls.” See her response below:
After taking issue with Tomczak’s condescending use of quotation marks about her marriage to Portia de Rossi, DeGeneres offered, “Larry, The only way I’m trying to influence people is to be more kind and compassionate with one another. That is the message I’m sending out.” Then she tried some light brainwashing, saying, “Attention youth of the world: I want you to live your lives being exactly who you are. Be true to yourself — the most important thing is to be true to yourself.”
Damn. It’s dusty in here right now.
