We are still witnessing the WGA and SAG/AFTRA strike fallout. Studios are using the strike as an excuse to order fewer shows and put fewer movies into development. This summer will see theaters laden with re-releases instead of proper releases. It’s bleak. Hopefully, things will get better. For now, we play the waiting game. However, not all of the fallout is bad.
During the strike, Drew Carey purchased food for striking writers (for the second time) who showed their membership cards at Bob’s Big Boy in Burbank, California. He even covered the tip because he’s a mensch and a half. Carey’s goodwill helped feed many writers who did not know when their next check would be coming (or if it ever would). Carey was praised at the time, as he should have been. That didn’t stop WGA members from praising him at last night’s Writers Guild Awards.
Carey took to the stage during the awards, plate of food in hand, to talk about his decision to feed writers and crack a few jokes. “I didn’t know it was going to cost me so much money,” Carey joked. “The last [strike] it was like, I think the total bill was like $67,000. I thought it was going to be about the same thing. But then some of you decided ‘oh yeah I’m going to a get a shake and some dessert.”
Not everyone was on board with Carey’s generosity. His accountant asked him if “there is any way we can dial this back?’” Carey said his publicist voiced the same concerns. His response was simple. “Nope, I already said I would. It’s the right thing to do.” He’s so cool.
Carey didn’t stop there. He ended his time on stage by dodging adulation and praising the people in the room. “I really appreciate all the thanks and stuff,” added Carey. “I don’t think I should get that much credit for doing the right thing … you writers, The Drew Carey Show writers, made me a f***ing million. Everybody in this room makes some actor a million, and you deserve all the money you get, all the credit you get. Thank you so much for everything you do. God bless all of you.”
