Drew Barrymore's Humorous Candor About Her Post-Baby Self-Image Is Utterly Delightful

I’ve always loved Drew Barrymore, and I’m certain if she’d just pop in for a cuppa, we’d be best friends inside half an hour. Having lived out practically her entire life in the public eye, she’s got a confident, unapologetic attitude that shines through; “I’m me, and if you don’t like it, go fuck yourself.” She’s also been pretty open in discussing her imperfections, and it’s that down-to-earth, willing to share nature that only makes her more likable. So, it’s no surprise that when she spoke with Glamour about what she thinks of her post-baby (two!) body, Barrymore was brutally honest, and funny:

“After making two babies, holy cow, does your body do some crazy stuff! It’s hard to stay positive and love yourself. You feel like a kangaroo with a giant pouch; everything’s saggy and weird. But you think about how beautiful it is that you’re able to make children. When I lose sight of that, I exercise, read Dr. Seuss’s Oh, the Places You’ll Go!, and spend time with my kids. Then I start to see things that are bigger than myself.”

Yup! As any woman who’s given birth knows, there are changes to your body that just can’t be undone. While many magazines like to highlight celebrities who seem to miraculously bounce back a couple of weeks after having a baby, for most of us that’s a long, slow process that takes a backseat to all the other things that come with having children (sleep, feeding, changing, crying, unbalanced hormones, getting through every day an hour at a time). Next thing you know, months have slipped by, and you’re still living in sweatpants, milk-stained t-shirts, and you haven’t looked at yourself naked in a really long time. When you do, it can be a bit of a shock! As with celebrities who are working to help destigmatize breastfeeding, it’s really cool of Drew to publicly share her insecurities.

“You don’t always have to look stunning on Instagram. I’ve been makeupless, pregnant, and stuffing food in my face in many pictures; that makes it all the more exciting when I do do something more attractive. I don’t like it when everyone looks so perfect all the time. Where’s the humor in that?”

Indeed. I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t be getting through these parenthood years with humor, stuffing food in my face, and oh…a little bit of alcohol.
