The GOP is eager to blame mass shootings on anything but guns. So, they’re rolling out thoughts and prayers, paying lip service to mental health, throwing back to their classic scapegoat of video games, and busting out some unexpected new targets, like feral hogs and drag queen advocates.
Ohio Republican state lawmaker Candice Keller earned national headlines over a Facebook post where she blamed plenty of things for the mass shootings that plague our nation. She represents a district close to Dayton, Ohio, where over the weekend a lone gunman murdered 9 people and injured 27 more. In response to the tragedy, Keller began by writing, “After every mass shooting, liberals start the blame game. Why not place the blame where it belongs?”
After blaming Democrats for starting the blame game, Keller went on to blame them for mass shootings, along with Obama, “the snowflakes,” video games, “fatherlessness,” open borders, protesting pro athletes who kneeled during the national anthem, “the breakdown of the traditional American family,” and “transgender, homosexual marriage, and drag queen advocates.”
Note: her list did not include lax gun laws.
Keller has since deleted the post, but USA Today has receipts:
In the wake of this homophobic, racist, transphobic, misogynistic, and otherwise ignorant post, Ohio Republican Party leader Jane Timken has called for Keller to resign. And she’s not alone. Here’s how drag queens have responded to the latest mass shootings and Keller’s comments:
Shangela also shared words of wisdom for renowned drag queen advocate Jenifer Lewis:
Finally, we close with Ohio’s own drag queen advocate Nina West (Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s personal fave!), who has plenty to say on this matter. The pride of season 11 of RuPaul’s Drag Race and the uncontested Miss Congeniality set aside her crown and took off her earrings to go in on Keller. And she brought some friends along to put faces to “drag queen advocate.”
Oh, Candice Keller, you have poked the wrong queen.

There are so many things wrong with the statements this representative is making, let alone the disgusting timing of it all. Ms. Keller, your time is up. Resign. You are using this tragedy to further your political career and shift the conversation away… https://t.co/yWXILcQLo6

Again, Ms. Keller, your time is up. RESIGN. #ResignCandiceKeller

This is a time for queens, not cowards. Go, West!
