Dolly Parton Is Never Going to Retire, Stop Asking

Dolly Parton has said before that she’d rather “drop dead” on stage than retire. But there is one other thing that would drag her away.

“I’ve always said that if my husband was in ill health or needed me, I would most definitely pull way back,” she said at the CMA Fest in Nashville this week.

Her husband is the elusive Carl Thomas Dean, whom she’s been married to for a whopping 58 years after meeting him in a laundromat in the ’60s. Mr. Dean has not been seen in public since, or at least as far as I know, but he must be doing something right for a heavenly creature such as Dolly to stay with him that long. She’s spoken about the secret to their sauce before:

“He loves music, but he’s not in the music business at all, so we have different things to talk about, his world and my world. We have a lot of love and respect for each other, and I think the key to all of it—we both have a crazy, warped sense of humor, so we have a lot of fun.”

So she’s telling me to definitely not marry another writer, right? I mean, my therapist said the same thing, but it isn’t true until Dolly says it. I feel like if I could have a combo of whatever Dolly and Carl are doing and Sheryl Lee Ralph’s deal with her husband, I’d be happy.

Anyway, hopefully her hubby doesn’t need her anytime soon because she’s got a lot on her plate lately. There was that little Beyoncé cameo and now a musical, but that’s just the way she likes it.

“I’ve kind of dreamed myself into a corner and I’ve got to be responsible for that,” she continued at CMA Fest. “I’ll always be doing something, but I may pull back a little bit here and there, now and then.” But “Not today.”

“I got to get some more groceries on the shelf and sell some more pies and cakes and brownies.”
