It’s not just US late night talk show hosts grappling with how to inform us of the latest mind-melting news coming out of the White House while also allowing us a chuckle as the very concept of democracy burns before our eyes. In the UK, the chat show The Last Leg discussed with its guests Trump’s most recent insults against the press, noting that UN experts’ fear such remarks could lead to violence against members of the media. While some on the panel cracked jokes while sitting alongside a man wearing an ostrich-rider costume, Scottish actor David Tennant took the opportunity to address the tyranny of the Trump regime and his fears for its future.
The bit that’s going viral is when Tennant assured the world that Scotland has no love for Trump.

But the Doctor Who star—who is no stranger to criticizing Trump—had much more to say on the matter, noting, “This is how totalitarian regimes begin.” You can see the full clip of Tennant’s reaction below. His bit starts at the 2:06 mark.
“I think it’s genuinely, genuinely horrifying,” Tennant begins. “I think this is how totalitarian regimes begin. I think we’ve got to be really alert to this. This isn’t normal. This is not acceptable. If come these midterm elections in November, if the Democrats don’t take back either the House or the Senate, I’m really worried for what happens to the world…I just pray that in twenty years time, we look back and go, ‘Wow! That was a crazy time, wasn’t it? Thank goodness we escaped that.’ And we’re not actually in some Orwellian, dystopian future, which it suddenly feels like we genuinely are in the footholes of. I think there’s something really, properly horrific going on and I think we all need to be really, really aware. And really a little bit scared.”
Addressing Trump’s recent visit to the UK, Tennant said, “When he was over here and he was talking about England and he was saying ‘I’m going out to Scotland for my golf course in Scotland cause people in London are protesting but obviously [in] Scotland they really like me.’ Can I just say, on behalf of the Scottish nation, we fucking don’t.”
I realize to some of you, Tennant is Barty Crouch Jr. from Harry Potter or Kilgrave from Jessica Jones. For me, he’ll always be the Doctor first and foremost. So this speech reminds me of the Doctor standing up to countless bullies and baddies, putting his foot down and his neck on the line for humanity once more. When Tennant turns to look straight into camera, his face drained of any warmth and says, “We fucking don’t.” I get chills, which give way to hope. Because on Doctor Who, this is the moment where things are at their very darkest and most bleak. This is the moment where it feels like all is lost, and the Doctor will truly fail this time. But the Doctor, like mankind, always finds that spark of hope that pushes us forward and out of the darkness.
I know it’s hard right now. It’s horrifying. It’s so, so dark. But the fight’s not over yet. And hey, we got the Doctor on our side.
If you need a bit more of a pick-me-up, how about that time Tennant sang the Ducktales theme and made it surprisingly hot?
