Did You Remember that Scarlett Johansson Was Married? Yeah, So, About That

Two years ago, this would have been a significant news story (I think), but if there’s one infinitesimal upside to the Trump era, it’s that celebrity gossip has taken a much lower priority in our collective consciousness, which is why it barely registered that Scarlett Johansson filed for divorce from Romain Dauriac yesterday.

I had forgotten they were married, but this is not even the first news of their break-up. They apparently split last summer, but didn’t announce that until January, and yet, despite being apart for the last eight months, Romain Dauriac — a normal — was “shocked” by the divorce filing and saw it as a “pre-emptive strike” in the custody arrangement (the couple’s prenup agreement did not address custody).

Johansson is asking for joint custody, and that her daughter live with her, which is news to Dauriac, who has been taking care of their daughter while Johansson has been away filming and promoting movies. Dauriac plans to petition the court to take their daughter to live with him in France.

Johansson released the following statement to the AP:

“I would only like to say that I will never, ever be commenting on the dissolution of my marriage. Out of respect for my desires as a parent and out of respect for all working moms, it is with kindness that I ask other parties involved and the media to do the same.”

Anyway, this might explain her comments last month about how “monogamy isn’t natural.” Johansson’s views on monogamy have vacillated over the course of two marriages in the last decade.

In either respect, Johansson will be fielding questions about whitewashing in Ghost in the Shell for the next three weeks during the press tour, so this news should at least create another awkward topic of conversation for nosy junket journos.
