Weddings are meant to be celebrations of love and devotion. But sometimes people go a little off the beaten past, culturally misappropriating Native American culture, or fantasizing of a time when black people were treated as sub-human, or using the big day as an excuse to rock your favorite Nazi gear. Or if you’re the co-founder of the American rock band behind “Whip It,” you get married on September 11th and make one of your homeland’s most transformative tragedies your theme.

That’s right. Devo bassist and singer Jerry Casale and his new bride Krista Napp got married last Friday and made 9/11, the day terrorists hijacked planes and murdered 2,977 people, the theme of their wedding. Now, as a human with a functional soul you might wonder how one does such a thing? Well, it involves a Twin Towers wedding cake and box cutters as wedding favors.

Wearing “Injun” garb for wedding day funsies is moronic. Glorifying apartheid or the Nazis is all kinds of awful. But damn. Casale’s wedding actually relishes in the atrocity!

In their defense, the newlyweds insist this wasn’t what they intended, but a friendly favor that stemmed from a (horrendous) inside joke.

THR reports some of the 20-some guests had voiced concerns about holding a wedding on the 14th anniversary of the national disaster. Casale claims it was the last Friday available before their marriage application expired, but added, that it was fitting because he and his beloved “are the Twin Towers of love.”

According to Cassale, an unidentified friend offered to handle the cake, party favors and table settings which included place cards with a boxcutter engraved with the couple’s names. Casale claims he too was surprised and dismayed about the “transgressive sick humor” adding, “It’s not funny.” He also laments the media attention to this has “ruined our wedding.”

The media attention ruined their modest 9/11-themed wedding.

Kristy Puchko truly can’t even.
