At the end of Closer, the stand-up special that has provoked serious backlash both within Netflix and in the wider world, Chappelle said he would no longer make jokes about the LGBTQ+ community until everyone agreed “we are laughing together,” which should have been his stance all along.

Mere weeks after the special was released, Chappelle has already gone back on his promise. In addition to joking that he wouldn’t sit down with trans employees and their allies at Netflix until the company admitted that Hannah Gadsby “is not funny,” Chappelle took a number of swipes at the trans community in a stand-up special in New Orleans last night, where he was touring with, uh, Joe Rogan.

From NOLA.com:

When an audience member offered a cup of beer, Chappelle, who was sipping something all night, declined out of fear it might contain “transgender formula.”

His revelation that one of his two well-dressed bodyguards — one of whom took a guest turn on the microphone mid-show to sing — previously played for the Dallas Cowboys was met with a chorus of boos. “Travis, hear that?” he retorted. “Sounds like someone’s team loses a lot.”

When the audience objected further, he quipped, “Don’t go all trans on me.”

Why, someone had asked him, did he need bodyguards? “Because these transgenders are trying to kill me!”

Chappelle has not only broken his promise already, but he’s doubling down. In addition to the jokes at the expense of the trans community, Chappelle also joked about “his friend,” Louis C.K.:

An upcoming magazine article calls him “Cancel Bait.” To which a grinning Chappelle replied, “As my friend Louis C.K. said, ‘I’m a master baiter.’”

Hahaha! Remember when Louis C.K. masturbated in front of all those female comedians without consent! Hilarious!

Alas, all the middle-aged comics — Chappelle, Rogan, Louis C.K., Jon Stewart — are going to bat for one another. All they need now is Ricky Gervais. At least we still have Bobcat.
