It’s the end of the Muggles (in America), and Harry Potter feels fine.
What am I on about, you might wonder? WHAT? You haven’t heard about the Great Muggle Controversy of 2015? I don’t see how that’s possible, but here, let me clue you in.
On November 4th, 2015, author extraordinaire J.K. Rowling announced that in her new prequel Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them — set in 1920s New York City — American wizards use a different word than “Muggle” to discuss people who aren’t magical. (The horror! A writer who’s made up dozens of words as part of her made-up world, made up a new made-up word! Can you imagine?) The American equivalent of Muggle was revealed by Rowling to be “No-Maj,” pronounced “no-madge,” and surprise! — fans lost their goddamned minds. (Let’s not forget these are some of the same people who, no matter how many times Rowling reminds, can’t get it through their heads that the new HP play is not a prequel.)
Leave it to
Igor and Victor Daniel Radcliffe and James McAvoy, currently on press rounds for Victor Frankenstein, to give this important matter the attention it deserves. Asked what he makes of the fan-generated crisis, Harry Potter himself was quite pragmatic.
“I have no strong opinions about this. We have different words in England, so it makes perfect sense that there should be a different word for it in America.”
Thankfully, James McAvoy was slightly more realistic about the severity of the situation, and unafraid to reveal his true emotions.
“You have no strong feelings about this? It doesn’t keep you up at night? I’m outraged! I’d be more excited to see what wizards from America and wizards from the U.K. [fight about], like coriander versus cilantro.”
Which apparently was a ***Spoiler***
Radcliffe: “That’s a lot of the prequel actually. It starts with 10 pages of that.”
OMG, that lucky dog got to read the script already!
Fucking celebrity privilege…
P.S. In case you hadn’t noticed, they’re both BALD! (McAvoy for X-Men: Apocalypse, Radcliffe for Imperium. Victor Frankenstein is in theaters November 25th.
