If there’s one thing we know about actress, author, entrepreneur, “iconic entertainer, eco-celeb,” and all-around discerning advisor and shopper, Gwyneth Paltrow, it’s that she supports her fellow women. In between helping with our Christmas lists, teaching us how to end our relationships gracefully, to be unafraid to really see ourselves as others do — and how to see our true selveshow to stay balanced and energized, eat well, and host the best parties (whew!), Paltrow manages to attend her now-nearly-equally-famous trainer’s classes several times a week. Whether Tracy Anderson was destined to conquer the world by Gwyneth’s side, who can say? But, one thing’s for sure: These two ladies are happy to sing each others’ praises, and to spread their acquired wisdom, and eating, working-out, and couture habits wherever they go — in this case, The Hamptons. Speaking to Hamptons Magazine Gwyneth and Tracy profusely complimented and credited each other while simultaneously providing valuable advice to we who may not have achieved our optimum combined eating-training ratio, or realized the kind of detrimental effect wearing improper workout clothing can have on our lives. And instead of handing us her own Goop, Gwyneth let her friend and guru dispense most of the important tips. Come on, people; let’s Hampton! We can do this!*

Lesson 1: Exercise is not an option

Tracy Anderson: “[About Gwyneth’s commitment to work out] Usually with people in your position, who are iconic entertainers, who have to learn lines and have to learn choreography, the last thing they want to do is learn more choreography. This [dance] is not even something that was in your immediate wheelhouse, but it was something I needed to do to get the results I wanted you to get. The way you stuck with it and didn’t complain; I will always be so proud of you for that.”

Gwyneth Paltrow: “Somebody came up to me in the Brentwood gym, and she said, “I’ll see you at some award show the night before and then, first thing in the morning, you’re here. You never miss. How do you do it?” I shared what you said when I first started the method: If you’re going to do it properly, you have to do it several times a week. When I started, I was doing it six days a week because I was trying to get in shape for Iron Man. I remember there was a certain point when I felt like I was going to cry. I just physically and mentally couldn’t do it anymore. It was just too hard for me. You said to me, ‘Don’t even think of it like that. It’s not an option. It’s like brushing your teeth. You get up and do it.’ I had such a powerful shift that day. You showed me how to take the option out of it and make it something you do for self-care as a woman who wants to feel good in her body and feel healthy and feel strong.”

Lesson 2: Workout clothes do matter.

GP: To me, you’re a total fitness expert. You look like some kind of swimsuit model, but you’re really a scientist. That’s how I see the Tracy Anderson lifestyle. [You know the regimen,] the food combinations, and the best exercise clothes, but you also have such great style.”

TA: “You’re right, it is a total support system for people to have the tools to create balance. If you need to lose weight, if you want to make sure you’re balanced everywhere and you’re able to perform, the food really matters. [And what you wear to work out really matters.] If you’re just in a crummy T-shirt with spit-up on it from your baby, then your performance is not going to be what it can be.”

Lesson 3: How to get people readers back on (the) subject.

GP: “What is your connection to the Hamptons?”

TA: “Funny you should ask that of me, since you’re responsible for introducing me to [the Hamptons]. But the Hamptons is where I’ve called home for the last eight years—ever since we first started working together on your lovely body for the first Iron Man. You, of course, have a beautiful home in Amagansett, and were lovely enough to bring me and my family out for the summer to continue our work together. We just have never left.”

Lesson 4: Helpful advice for the non-locals, aka weary vacationers.

GP: You have a different perspective than I do because you’re a year-round Hamptons person; we go summers and we come to our house for Christmas—it’s a vacation house for us….Do you have—I need to know this—any manicure spots, facial, massage, or beauty salons out here that you like?”

TA: I’m the worst person to ask for this. I don’t get facials, I don’t get massages; I just did a gel manicure yesterday for the very first time in my life.

I have a massage person whom I like, but she comes to my house.”

Lesson 5: How not to promote your newest venture.

GP: “What are your favorite restaurants?”

TA: “My favorite is Tutto il Giorno. It is open year-round but not every night. The place I pretty much feed myself year-round is Cavaniola’s Gourmet Cheese Chop in Sag Harbor. They care so much about the products they put in their shop. They have gluten-free crackers—finally—for my family. I’m not a chef like you are; I can make a meal, but the kitchen becomes a disaster—it’s really not worth it…

…I’ve fgured [sic] out how to make the best cookies that have no gluten, no soy, no dairy, no nuts, no eggs—all the main common allergens.”
