Last night, amidst news that the Oregon standoff “protesters” had been acquitted and “posed no threat to the public” while those on the Standing Rock Reservation stood against armed National Guardsmen for protesting the installation of the Dakota Access Pipeline on holy sacred ground, Chris Hemsworth and Taika Waititi showed their support for the side of good.

In addition to their message of support for the protesters, Hemsworth took the opportunity to make an apology. Last year, photos were posted of him at a Halloween party. He and many other guests were dressed as First Nations people.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to raise something that has been bothering me for sometime. Last New Year’s Eve I was at a “Lone Ranger” themed party where some of us, myself included, wore the traditional dress of First Nations people. I was stupidly unaware of the offence this may have caused and the sensitivity around this issue. I sincerely and unreservedly apologise to all First Nations people for this thoughtless action. I now appreciate that there is a great need for a deeper understanding of the complex and extensive issues facing indigenous communities. I hope that in highlighting my own ignorance I can help in some small way.”

While some might understandably bristle at the significant amount of time between act and apology, this amount of time removes any air of PR and face-saving. It also shows he actually learned something, as opposed to knee-jerk contrition to look good. And by including as part of a public message of support for a truly important cause? Well done, Hemsworth.
