Before we go down this road this morning, I would like to set the record straight on one thing. Someone at another publication — and I won’t say who — referred to Christian Slater yesterday as a member of the “Brat Pack.” OK, no. Christian Slater was never a Brat Packer. He arrived on the scene several years later. He wasn’t in The Outsiders or St. Elmo’s Fire and he did not work in movies with Rob Lowe or Ally Sheedy or even Tom Cruise. Christian Slater was of the Winona Ryder, Johnny Depp, Samantha Mathis, Keanu Reeves generation of actors. I have nothing against the Brat Pack — there are many fine members — but the two sets of actors are quite distinct.

I mention all of this because Christian Slater was trending on Twitter yesterday, and Christian Slater was trending on Twitter yesterday because Chris Evans may have taken advantage of the legalization of marijuana and tweeted something that has all the markers of a pot thought: There is the suggestion of profundity, but in reality, Chris Evans is not saying anything.

As much as I would like to decipher this tweet for meaning, we must all face reality here. Chris Evans is saying nothing. It’s a collection of words arranged in a particular order to effect no real meaning. Christian Slater only looks like Christian Slater because of the meaning we ascribe to those two words, Christian Slater, because of what we know about Christian Slater. If there had never been a Christian Slater, and you saw Christian Slater in 1989, you would not guess that he looks like a Christian Slater, because Christian Slater did not exist to evoke that association.

On the other hand, this tweet, from Chris’ brother Scott Evans, is clear and rich in meaning.
