Alright here’s a fun game. A fun, very very short game. Like, really short. It’s almost pointless to even give it a name at this point as it’s probably over already, the answer having been given away by a minuscule scroll of the mouse wheel—or even just having eyes I guess—but nevertheless the game is called: ‘Can you guess who this celebrity shaving is?’

Tick, tock.

Tick, tock.

Tick, tock.

Okay, that’s time!

And the answer is:

That’s right, it’s none other than Jack Black himself, shaving his Covid-catching beard and Colonel Kurtzing it around his house in speedos, diving headfirst into a pool in a manoeuvre he calls ‘the stealth bomber!’

I love Jack Black. Do you remember the time when everyone sort of seemed to hate Jack Black? I didn’t imagine that, right? Wasn’t there a period around the 2000’s or so when everyone seemed to be in agreement that Jack Black was somehow sneer-worthy, his whirling dervish of perpetual motion and limitless energy a thing to scorn. I never understood that myself. Even during his most questionable career choices—the Shallow Hals and the Gulliver’s Travels—I could never find myself to be anything but fond of the dude. When directors know how to channel Black’s tornado persona, great stuff can happen (School of Rock, High Fidelity, Bernie); Tenacious D have and always will rock; and if you never played the 2009 hack ‘n’ slash/real time strategy game Brütal Legend then you missed out on a flawed yet damn good experience, filled with enough references and cameos (Lemmy! Ozzy! Halford!) to make any metalhead happy for weeks on end, and featuring a truly inspired Black performance. I mean, check this out—I could watch a few seasons’ worth of a TV show of this:

Plus, you know, he’s responsible for one of the greatest talk show entrances of all time:

So I’ve always loved Jack Black, even during that period I vaguely maybe-remember that many other didn’t. Now, in our Satan’s year of 2020, Black seems to have come into general favour again. He appears to have aged into a bearded heavy metal Santa-type figure, his energy perhaps softening a bit (but only a little bit) to tempt people back into the fold. When Black announced he had joined Tik Tok, there was much rejoicing. Black’s launching of a video game streaming channel on YouTube two years ago was a dynamite success too. So here’s me hoping that a full-on Jack Blackassaince is very much in swing.
