Cameron Diaz Really Is Retired

I’d heard rumors earlier this month, later retracted, that Cameron Diaz had retired, but I didn’t want to believe them, though the evidence suggested otherwise. Diaz hasn’t appeared in a movie since 2014, when she starred in three: The Other Woman, Sex Tape and Annie (which, like, isn’t a good movie, but it’s not as bad as people make it out to be: The music is solid, and Quvenzhané Wallis — who hasn’t been around much since then, either — is terrific. I should know; I’ve seen it a number of times (the kids are not allowed to see the original because it is deeply problematic. Also, Daddy Warbucks in that is kind of terrifying)).

Anyway, in an interview between The Sweetest Thing co-stars Diaz, Christina Applegate, and Selma Blair with EW to look back on the 2002 film (it’s a fun interview), Diaz admitted that she has retired.

Have the three of you reunited since filming?

DIAZ: Goddamn it, why not?

APPLEGATE: I don’t know. You guys tell me. I see Selma.

BLAIR: Our kids are friends. Cameron?

DIAZ: Maybe I should, you know, I mean, I’m down. I’m literally doing nothing.

APPLEGATE: I’m literally doing nothing, too! I’m semi-retired, I haven’t worked for years. I’m a mom, that’s what we do. So I’m around, man.

DIAZ: That’s so awesome. I’m totally down. I’m semi-retired, too, and I am actually retired, so I would love to see you ladies.

BLAIR: I would love it.

Applegate, too? Shame, that. I don’t think we really got a chance to appreciate Diaz while she was working, and I still contend she was never better than any Vanilla Sky, a movie everyone but me seems to hate. Whatever.

Incidentally, Cameron Diaz’s co-star in 2014’s Sex Tape, Jason Segal, has not retired, it’s just that he never makes anything anyone sees, which is something he can do while living on those HIMYM residuals. It is ironic that he’s the actor who was most adamant about ending the series’ run.
