Georgia’s Governor Brian Kemp recently signed into law a highly controversial bill essentially outlawing abortion from the moment a fetal heartbeat can be detected, which is about six weeks. It’s one of the most restrictive abortion laws in the nation and this ‘heartbeat bill’ will inevitably put countless women at harm as well as not do a damn thing to stop abortion. A reminder that, at 6 weeks, most women don’t even know they’re pregnant. That’s just known as a late period.

Protests have been happening against this bill for a while, with Hollywood now being called upon to step up with more forceful action and a possible boycott of the state. Keep in mind that Georgia is basically Marvel HQ now, so if they were to pull out of production there in protest, that would certainly send the right message. Others have been talking about the bill’s effects in more personal terms, including Busy Philipps. The actress and host of Busy Tonight opened up about her own experience with abortion when she was 15 in a brief but emotional plea.

‘I know that people feel very strongly about abortion, but let me just say this: Women and their doctors are in the best position to make informed decisions about what is best for them. Nobody else, nobody […] The statistic is that one in four women will have an abortion before age 45. That statistic sometimes surprises people, and maybe you’re sitting there thinking, “I don’t know a woman who would have an abortion.” Well, you know me.’

If you’ve read Busy’s book This Will Only Hurt a Little then this story will be familiar to you, but at a time when our reproductive rights have never been more at risk and the demonizing of abortion has reached new heights, it feels more crucial than ever for the one in four women who have had an abortion to speak up when they can.

If you are able to do so, now would be a good time to donate to Planned Parenthood.
