Bryan Cranston Thinks Kevin Spacey and Harvey Weinstein Deserve a Second Chance. F*ck That

Remember how everyone hated Skyler White because she was mean to her murderous drug lord husband? That, my friends, was because there exists within our society a knee-jerk need to distrust, tear down and hate women and to exert power over them should they be anything other than subservient. This extends to and is magnified for marginalized people as well as other men who can be victimized by the patriarchal notions of gender, sexuality and masculinity. And, so, this finally bubbled over and people were at last empowered to come forward and, at least some of them, share their stories of sexual harassment and assault at the hands of powerful men.

But from this we’ve seen what other men will allow and excuse. What they’ll compromise on. Spoiler: it’s not the sexmonster ones.

Take Walter White himself. Bryan Cranston, in an interview with the BBC, let it be known that we should all just come onnnnnnn, be cool about all this.

“It would take time, it would take a society to forgive them, and it would take tremendous contrition on their part,” Cranston said. “And a knowingness that they have a deeply rooted psychological and emotional problem and it takes years to mend that. If they were to show us that they put the work in and were truly sorry and making amends and not defending their actions but asking for forgiveness then maybe down the road there is room for that. Maybe so. Then it would be up to us to determine, case by case, whether or not this person deserves a second chance.”

That’s a whole lot of words that basically just say, “You just have to be really sorry for all the rape and sexual assault.” And before you say I’m twisting his words, he went on.

“We should let that open,” he said. “We shouldn’t close it off and say, ‘To hell with him, rot, and go away from us for the rest of your life.’ Let’s not do that. Let’s be bigger than that. Let’s leave it open for the few who can make it through that gauntlet of trouble and who have reclaimed their life and their dignity and their respect for others. Maybe it’s possible.”

The amount of leeway white men give other white men is incredible. The level of solidarity that exists within the white cishet male world would almost be inspiring if it weren’t designed around fucking the rest of us over.

If you are bending over backwards to ask people to forgive a fucking sex criminal, even on a “case by case” basis? You’ve taken a wrong turn.

I don’t fucking care about giving a rapist another chance. I don’t have any interest in coddling a population that can’t have the decency to not damage people because they feel like it. And I certainly have no interest in giving them the capacity to continue to make millions of dollars and continue in positions of power after rapist rehab or whatever the fuck you think they’re doing. Not interested. And you should ask yourselves why you’re more concerned about that than their victims.
