Friends, I love Britney Spears and am pulling for her, always. So much so that on my 33rd birthday, I dragged my friend to see Britney’s Vegas residency show, Piece of Me, because you have to make hay while the sun shines. So it is with great pleasure that I tell you that the musical stylings of one Ms Britney Jean Spears is coming to Broadway via the new show Once Upon a One More Time.

The musical will make its debut in Chicago this fall, and after (what I pray will be) a successful run there, will transfer to Broadway. Not a whole lot is known about the show, although it’s described, per the New York Times:

Unlike many jukebox musicals, this show will not be about Ms. Spears’s life (which has not been a fairy tale), but instead will offer a revisionist look at some legendary characters. In the show, a fortnightly book club whose members include Snow White, Cinderella, Rapunzel and Sleeping Beauty, is working its way through a collection of the Grimms’ fairy tales — the only book they have. But when the women wish for new reading material, a fairy godmother brings them Ms. Friedan’s feminist classic, “The Feminine Mystique,” and their lives are altered in unexpected ways.

This is exciting news for all fans of Brit Brit, although the articles surrounding it are slightly confusing because they don’t mention who is writing it, only that it will feature a book by Jon Hartmere (who wrote the screenplay for that terrible Kevin Hart movie The Upside.) Friends, if there’s one thing I know deep in my bones it is that a story that is even tangentially related to Britney Spears needs to be handled with care, and based on how complicated women are often written by men, well, I think a woman is more equipped to handle this story, don’t you? The play will be directed by Kristin Hanggi, who was nominated for a Tony with Rock of Ages.

So, what can we expect from a musical that is anchored by Britney Spears music?

First and foremost, I expect a show-stopping number set to “Work Bitch.” It would be unforgiveable for this not to occur.

Additionally, the underrated classic “Lucky” needs to make an appearance, because it’s a moving slow jam, and coincidentally is also my jam.

Finally, and this is most important, “Toxic” needs to be in reference to toxic masculinity and how it damages everyone. This is non-negotiable, and I will consider the entire thing a bust if it doesn’t happen.

Here’s what I know unequivocally: I will see this show in Chicago and nothing will stop me. I hope to see you there, friends!
