Brad Pitt to Marc Maron: 'I'm Trash Mag Fodder Because of My Disaster of a Personal Life'

Yesterday’s WTF with Marc Maron featured two guests, Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt, and it’s a solid episode despite the fact that neither Pitt nor DiCaprio break any news or offer much by way of personal revelation. The hour-long episode is more akin to listening to Rick Dalton and Cliff Booth shoot the shit as DiCaprio and Pitt for an hour — it’s an easygoing conversation, DiCaprio and Pitt clearly enjoy one another’s company, and they both like Maron, especially Pitt. In fact, Pitt confesses upfront that he watched Marc Maron’s TV show Maron three times through. “It’s my happy place,” he tells Maron. “Dude, I’m a fan! I love the show. To see you miserable makes me not feel so bad. It really does.” DiCaprio confirms as much, saying that Pitt talked about Maron’s show more than once on the set of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

As personal revelations go, that’s about as deep as it gets: Brad Pitt owning up to watching Maron’s little-seen TV show multiple times because Maron’s misery gives Pitt comfort. Pitt and DiCaprio do talk about their earlier careers — roles in Critters 3, Growing Pains, and playing Joaquin Phoenix’s role in the first Parenthood TV series for DiCaprio (who still speaks very highly of Alan Thicke) and an episode of Growing Pains and 21 Jump Street for Pitt.

They also get into art — Brad Pitt’s into sculpture and paintings “that might inspire my children” — and the underground comic book scene in Los Angeles (R. Crumb, Robert Williams), a particular interest of DiCaprio and his father (DiCaprio’s “college fund” was a bunch of #1 issues of underground comic books). They talk about what it’s like working for Tarantino and Iñárritu and, for DiCaprio, Clint Eastwood (Pitt expresses a deep admiration for the performances of Paul Walter Hauser and Sam Rockwell in Richard Jewell).

They also talked about bad movies they made, without mentioning the name of those films. “You know when it’s a turd, though,” Pitt says. “You feel it. You just feel it. The first time you see it, and all the work that went into it, and you know it’s just a turd. It smells so bad.” If a friend tells you that they really “liked the score,” then you know you’re in trouble, Pitt added. Pitt also recounts smoking weed with Ed Norton before the world premiere of Fight Club and laughing together in all the inappropriate places during the Venice screening, so much so that the festival organizer got up and left.

The only time either DiCaprio or Pitt came close to talking about their personal lives was in a discussion about the paparazzi, and when in their careers it began for them. DiCaprio — who began seeing them after Titanic — told Maron that the paps don’t follow him around that much anymore “thank God.” But Pitt has gotten no relief. “I’m a little disgruntled with you,” Pitt tells DiCaprio. “I’m just, like, trash mag fodder. I don’t know why. Because of my disaster of a personal life, probably.”

That’s as much as either of them will say about their personal lives, although they do hilariously talk about schemes to avoid the paps. DiCaprio says it is useless, while Pitt says that he has a couple of getaways that he will not reveal “because they are still in play.”

Finally, Pitt says that the “Just remember this, you’re Rick Fucking Dalton,” line that Cliff delivers to Rick in Once Upon a Time was inspired by a deadbeat friend of Pitt’s in the ’90s. “I had this guy. Total freeloader. I always just see him walking back and forth wearing my clothes, using my dryer, eating my food. But he was there for me, you know what I mean? And one day, I was bitching and moaning, and he says, ‘Hey man. Don’t forget. You’re Brad Fucking Pitt.’ And you know what? It soothed me.”
