During the 2017 Grammy Awards, everyone was shocked when Adele’s 25 took home the award for Best Album over Beyoncé’s career-defining Lemonade. After all, the album heavily impacted pop culture as we know it, so the decision to snub Lemonade remains befuddling even after all these years. Despite the glaring oversight, Beyoncé isn’t concerned about the snub because she’s got much more important things to worry about.

I’ve always admired Beyoncé’s honesty and it’s no different here. Aside from the stunning shoot for the January 2020 cover story for Elle, the singer took part in a rare ask me anything-style interview that included several fan questions from across Instagram, Facebook, and email.

One fan in particular asked about the award and how she felt not winning. Was Beyoncé disappointed about the Grammy loss? Nope, and that’s because “being ‘number one’” was no longer at the top of her list anymore. (And also, Lemonade will live on forever in history, so take that Grammys!) She also candidly revealed what miscarriages taught her and what, as an artist, truly made her feel like a winner.

“I began to search for deeper meaning when life began to teach me lessons I didn’t know I needed. Success looks different to me now. I learned that all pain and loss is in fact a gift. Having miscarriages taught me that I had to mother myself before I could be a mother to someone else. Then I had Blue, and the quest for my purpose became so much deeper. I died and was reborn in my relationship [with husband Jay-Z], and the quest for self became even stronger. It’s difficult for me to go backwards. Being ‘number one’ was no longer my priority. My true win is creating art and a legacy that will live far beyond me. That’s fulfilling.”

Elsewhere in the interview, she was asked when she felt confident enough to own her own narrative. Beyoncé had this to say: “The more I mature, the more I understand my value,” and that spoke to me, personally. Also, Beyoncé knows you’re trying to sneak pictures of her while she’s at Target! Next up for the iconic singer is the Ivy Park x Adidas line, which will debut January 18.
