I’m in New York City this week and saw my first film at Alamo Drafthouse (it was The Shape of Water and I drank wine during it and I cried a whole lot — none of these details are in my review because #professionalism). While I was waiting for my friends to show up, I sat down at the fancy bar to get the full Alamo experience. I sipped my Pisco Sour and let my eyes wander the draft beer board over their wall of taps, and one name caught my eye: “Bïeryoncé.”
Yup, that’s a Beyoncé-inspired pilsner from Brooklyn’s Lineup Brewing. The company has a way with names — I’d definitely give a beer called “In Defense Of Ghosting” a taste — but this particular name has earned them a Cease & Desist from Queen Bey herself. Or more accurately her lawyers, because I mean… Beyoncé ain’t got time for that.
Pitchfork reports that Lineup’s owner, Katarina Martinez, is being pretty chill about the whole thing. “As a Hispanic, female run business, I am very inspired by her so I thought I’d pay homage,” Martinez told the outlet. “We’re disappointed she didn’t take it as a compliment, but oh well. It was fun while it lasted!”
“Bïeryoncé” came into being after Martinez missed one of Beyoncé’s concerts (despite having tickets), then decided to brew about it. Me, I’d just stew. I was given a ticket to the NYC premiere of Shaun of the Dead back in the day, but I was a dumb college student who decided to blow it off and get high instead of attending. I still regret that decision, but all I do is kick myself about it when I remember it. I haven’t, like, created an homage to get Edgar Wright’s attention. Which I suppose is my second mistake.
