Benson and Stabler Together to Investigate Especially Heinous Crimes on Twitter

Earlier this week, Dustin wrote about a rumor that a major network drama was killing off its star. We all guessed at what it might be. I’m leaning toward the ABC dramas, which have a tendency to push the “fast forward” button on plots and might need a big death to stir up attention at this point, but there were lots of other good suggestions. Thinking about it later, I realized that Law & Order: SVU might be another contender. The show has been on almost 17 years now, and I’m sure that Mariska Hargitay might want to be someone other than Olivia Benson eventually. And there was this hint in the rumor:

I’m told the death will occur toward the end of the episode, which will leave just enough time for an emotional, season-ending cemetery scene in which [redacted] bids an emotional farewell to [redacted].

That’s all basically an intro to this picture from Chris Meloni’s twitter:

Now, I’m not saying for sure that we’ll get a scene of Elliot Stabler sobbing over Benson’s headstone at the end of this season of SVU, and Chris Meloni is most emphatically saying that is NOT what’s happening, but I’d say it’s at least within the realm of possibility. And if it does happen, the next headstone to pop up in that graveyard will be SVU itself, because no matter how delightful Raul Esparza is, that show does not exist without Detective Olivia Benson.
