Ben Affleck is returning to rehab after his wife, Jennifer Garner, staged an intervention and drove the Gone Girl star to a rehab facility. This is Affleck’s third stint in rehab. It follows a week of messy news, in which we learned that he broke-up with SNL producer Lindsay Shookus and that he has been seeing 22-year-old Playmate Shauna Sexton.
None of us know the details, so I’m going to limit my thoughts to this: Jennifer Garner is a saint. Almost anyone else would have kicked Ben Affleck to the curb a long time ago and prohibited him from seeing their children. Given what we know, that is within the rights of Jennifer Garner.
Instead, she has continued to put off the divorce, in all likelihood because she is reluctant to come to an agreement with Affleck over custody and divorce settlements while he is in this state. Instead, she stages an intervention, holds his hand, and brings him back to rehab, because Jennifer Garner is not ready to give up on Ben Affleck. For whatever reason, she must see the best in him, and she is willing to ignore the fact that he is sleeping with a 22-year-old and parading himself around town either drunk or hungover because she probably believes that her children deserve a stable father in their lives, one who isn’t frequently snapped by paparazzi embarrassing himself.
Addiction is hard. Falling off the wagon is easy, especially in the midst of a divorce, during a tumultuous relationship, or when one’s career may not be going as well as one had hoped. Ben Affleck is lucky as hell to have someone like Jennifer Garner in his corner, whether he deserves it or not. She has a bottomless reservoir of patience, and from what we can tell, she’s one of the few who has not given up on Affleck.
And that’s all I’m going to say about that.
Jennifer Garner’s Peppermint will arrive in theaters next month.
