Meryl Streep is a terrific actress, who is regularly nominated by a largely white Academy for an Oscar every other year because, let’s face it, the experiences depicted in her movies often reflect those of the white Academy voters. Meryl is a great advocate when it comes to feminist issues, but when it comes to issues of racial diversity, Mrs. Streep has a tendency to STICK A BIG OLD FOOT IN HER MOUTH.
There was, for instance, this …

… which probably needs no explanation, but if you need one, here you go.
I’m just going to let her latest words speak for themselves. Asked about the all-white Berlin International Film Festival jury, which she will head, Mrs. Streep had this to offer:
This jury is evidence that at least women are included and in fact dominate this jury, and that’s an unusual situation in bodies of people who make decisions,” Streep said. “So I think the Berlinale is ahead of the game.”Asked by an Egyptian reporter whether she understood films from the Arab world and North Africa, Streep said that while she didn’t know much about the region, “I’ve played a lot of different people from a lot of different cultures.”
“There is a core of humanity that travels right through every culture, and after all we’re all from Africa originally,” she added. “Berliners, we’re all Africans really.”
Goddamnit, Meryl! Are you taking your talking points from Gwyneth now? Please don’t say things like that, because we love you, and want to continue to love you, and this makes it had to do that.
