In conjunction with SNL’s 40th Anniversary, many Five-Timers Club hosts cover THR this February — and a few of them got together to talk about their experiences. No surprise, there are a whole lot of white men…and Drew Barrymore and Candace Bergen. Still, the show has a great comedy (and music) history, sometimes even bringing out the funny in people who might otherwise not find it. Case in point, Ben Affleck, who notes: “I thought maybe I’m funny. Maybe I should like, do comedy, you know what I mean? And then I went and did a comedy and it was a complete bomb. And I was like, nope — it’s the show.”

Needs more cowbell.

Ben Affleck:

“…when you introduce really talented writers, every once in a while you get Dick in a Box. I would not be the same man were it not for Dick in a Box.

Justin Timberlake:

“My favorite sketch I ever did may be ‘Immigrant Tale.’ And If you count up the jokes, it’s 20-to-1 me making jokes about myself.”

Drew Barrymore:

“…as a fan, you feel like it’s a personal relationship you have with the cast. Someone graduates from the show, you’re like, ‘Well, now how am I going to feel about the show? I got so attached to those people!’ But then a new crop comes in and you get really excited.”

John Goodman:

My first time, I think I was still drunk on the flight home to L.A. the next morning, and I was singing the ‘Toonces the Cat’ theme at the top of my lungs.”

Danny DeVito:

“The best advice for any host is: Concentrate on the popcorn in Lorne’s office.”

SNL also announced it’s February 14th, 40th Anniversary Special cast list, which includes Paul McCartney, Kanye West, Justin Timberlake, Paul Simon,Taylor Swift, Kristen Wiig, Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Ana Gasteyer, Jack Nicholson, Jim Carrey, Peyton Manning, Chris Rock, Garrett Morris, Andy Samberg, Maya Rudolph, Martin Short, Betty White, Emma Stone, Derek Jeter, Jimmy Fallon, Dana Carvey, Adam Sandler, Melissa McCarthy, Will Ferrell, Robert De Niro, Jerry Seinfeld, Molly Shannon, Mike Meyers, Chevy Chase, Steve Martin, Dan Aykroyd, Eddie Murphy, Bill Murray, Alec Baldwin, Christopher Walken and Tom Hanks.
