Egg Whites.

That’s what stood out to me when Ariana Grande and Starbucks told the world they collaborated on a new coffee drink, the Cloud Macchiato. Available in cinnamon or caramel flavors, the Cloud Macchiato uses egg white powder in its fluffy foam topping.

“To create the Cloud Macchiato, Starbucks in-house product development team created a special recipe for Cloud powder, using egg whites a key ingredient that is added to the Cold Foam to create a fluffy texture that tastes luxurious.” - Chicago Sun Times

The drink is reportedly a push for the coffee giant to move past Frappuccinos and their high calorie/sugar content and into different iced beverages. However, you could get an iced caramel macchiato before this so I’m not sure I follow.

How does Grande fit in? She was the muse for this particular twist on one of Starbucks’ most popular drinks. Grande also released a perfume called Cloud last month and was named Starbucks’ new brand ambassador.

But how does the drink taste?

I ordered the iced Caramel Cloud Macchiato and was not disappointed by the presentation. The foam was the centerpiece of the drink, with caramel drizzle crisscrossing on top like ribbons on a present. The first sip was all caramel and foam, which was ridiculously silky and smooth.

I really think it was close to what drinking a cloud would taste like, kids. But with fewer angel feathers and more sugar.

The smoothness of the froth mellowed out the rest of the drink as well, making the coffee less bitter in comparison to the sweetness of the rest of the drink. It was a very enjoyable tasting experience, egg white powder and all. Is it worth an extra 20 cents to get the Cloud Macchiato instead of the regular version of the drink?

Um yes. They had me at luxurious (okay they had me at caramel).
