I feel like we need an infographic to share with doe-eyed starlets to show them that, “Yes, you’re a feminist.” Because every time I hear one (be it Shailene Woodley or Taylor Swift) proclaim she’s not, it’s inevitably followed by an explanation that proves she actually doesn’t know what the word means.
And that’s okay. We all make mistakes. And the latest to make one is Youtube celeb Michelle Phan, who has over a billion channel views and more than 7.7 million subscribers to her make-up tutorials, not to mention her own L’Oréal make-up line. Which is to say, she’s influential to girls in particular. So we’re disappointed that when Cosmopolitan asked Phan if she is a feminist she responded with:
“When you read about the real history of where feminism comes from, it came from a very political point of view. I don’t believe in bringing any politics to an idea like feminism. I love the idea that women should be celebrated, but I also believe men should be too. We need both — yin and yang. I wouldn’t even say I’m a humanist. Because what about animals? Ego places humans on top. I believe in making harmony with everything.”
In short, the 28-year-old believes “feminism” means a political movement to prove men are better than women, right? Basically, Spice Girl-era “Girl Power” with those classic militant, man-hating undertones.
You know what. Fuck it. Here’s an infographic from Huffpo:
Maybe be the Lena Dunham to Phan’s Taylor Swift and reach out to her. Educate her kindly. Let’s not reinforce the negative stereotypes too often used to make feminist look like humorless, hate-filled assholes.
Kristy Puchko isn’t an angry feminist as much as an exhausted one.
