In her first public appearance since her announcement she’d undergone another surgery to foil (that asshole) cancer, Angelina Jolie made a lovely, empowering speech at the Kids Choice Awards.

Cheered on by her own adorable children, Jolie took the stage to receive the Favorite Villain award for her Maleficent performance, and recalled feeling she was different when she was a child. Like anyone who’s ever had moments of feeling you don’t quite fit in with the rest of the crowd, Jolie wants to share what she later realized; different is good.

Having already had similar discussions with my kids a few times, I know how much it can mean to have just a little reassurance that being yourself is cool. Angelina passing on her heartfelt encouragement will help more kidlets than she can imagine.

(This book — in fact, the whole series — has always been a favorite at our house.)
