It’s award season, but not all awards shows are created equal. Or at least, they aren’t all televised. So sometimes it takes awhile for all the hot goss to leak out from behind the closed doors of whatever ballroom had been rented for the occasion. This week, we’ve been catching up on stories from Sunday night’s Writers Guild Awards. Chiefly, the incredible hosting duties performed by Amber Ruffin! Now, to be fair, she hosted the Awards ceremony for WGA East while the West Coast chapter had their own ceremony captained by Patton Oswalt. And he’s great, I love him, but he’s no Amber Ruffin. She’s the first Black woman to write for a network late night talk show (Late Night With Seth Myers), and also she’s ADORABLE.

Her opening monologue might be the best 10 minutes you spend today. Sure, some of the jokes are just statements of painful reality, but she also tells Bill Maher to go fuck himself!

The focus on diversity wasn’t just evidenced in her monologue. Apparently, she ended the show by highlighting four diverse writers who wrote the show with her, and need work.

Meanwhile, Kathy Griffin showed up to the West Coast proceedings to present an animation award. And she seemed super stoked going into it! It was her first red carpet appearance since the controversy erupted regarding that photoshoot with Tyler Shields, which resulted in the infamous shot of her holding President Trump’s severed head.

But what those happy pictures don’t convey is what apparently went down when she took the podium. According to Yahoo, she “slammed the Writers Guild,” saying:

“It’s me, Kathy Griffin — I got a haircut and I lost my career in a day. Hi!,” she began, before giving out the night’s animation award. “I just want to thank all the powerful writers and showrunners in this room for f***ing no support. Where the f*** have you been?…I was supposed to thank everyone for their support, and no one [lifted] their finger.”

Ouch. Well, at least we know both ceremonies were filled with expletives. Because language is the most important tool in a writer’s arsenal!
