Friends, not since Donna Martin have I been so happy to see someone I didn’t know graduate, and this time, the graduation wasn’t mired in the scandal of a drunk-at-prom 17-year old played by Tori Spelling, and a protest culminating in a school-wide walk out.
(The ’90s were wild. Let’s see the Riverdale kids reach those great dramatic heights.)
Yesterday, Amanda Bynes posted a picture from her graduation from California’s Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, and honestly? It warmed the cold cockles of my heart to see her doing well after hitting such a rough patch in her 20s and dealing with addiction.

Amanda Bynes, like Britney Spears, is one of those celebs I’m just pulling for. To have her deeply personal problems on display like they were, for all of the world to see and mock, was hard to observe and it never sat right with me how the media treated her during that time (although it wasn’t surprising.) So it’s great to see her thriving and hitting such an important milestone as graduation—especially when no one had to protest or shout “Amanda Bynes Graduates!” in order to get the institution to allow her to do so. Nope, she did it all on her own merits!
Let us never forget that Amanda Bynes, in addition to being in Easy A was in She’s the Man, which is one of the funniest teen-orientated movies in a post-Mean Girls era. Not only did it unleash Channing Tatum onto an unsuspecting public, it also gave us this classic scene:
…and this one, too.
Seriously, She’s the Man is great and if you haven’t seen it yet, you’re missing out. Ask me my thoughts on Sydney White, too. Another underrated Bynes classic, which I’m pretty sure I saw alone, in an empty theatre.
No word yet on what Amanda plans to do after this, but I know what I’m doing: obviously dusting off my DVD of She’s the Man. I suggest you do the same.
