Ron Jeremy, the porn actor, has been charged with raping three women and sexually assaulting a fourth, according to Los Angeles County prosecutors.

In a statement released by the office of L.A. District Attorney Jackie Lacey, Jeremy (real name, Ronald Jeremy Hyatt) ‘was charged in case BA488059 with three counts each of forcible rape and forcible penetration by a foreign object and one count each of forcible oral copulation and sexual battery.’ These incidents date back to 2014. He is accused of raping a 25-year-old woman at a home in West Hollywood in May 2014, as well as assaulting two women, ages 33 and 46, on separate occasions at a West Hollywood bar in 2017. A fourth charge, where Jeremy is accused of raping a 30-year-old woman in July 2019, is also listed. If found guilty, he could face up to 90 years in prison.

Jeremy had previously faced accusations from a case in 2016 but the District Attorney’s Office had declined to move forward with it due to insufficient evidence. Yesterday, Jeremy appeared in court wearing handcuffs and a face mask but did not enter a plea. His bail is currently set at $6.6 million. Via his attorney, Stuart Goldfarb Jeremy denied the charges in a statement to AFP news agency. Goldfarb said, ‘to allege that he is a rapist is beyond… I mean, women throw themselves at him.’

F**k you, dude.

Jeremy has been accused of sexual assault, harassment, and misconduct many times over the years, particularly at fan conventions, where many attendees claimed that he had groped and inserted his fingers into them without consent. He was previously banned from conventions organized by Exxxotica following a social media campaign by webcam model Ginger Banks. A 2017 piece from Rolling Stone notes the details of Banks’s case, which includes multiple accusations from women in the adult entertainment industry who felt that they would not be taken seriously because of their jobs and Jeremy’s status as an elder statesman of porn.

Jeremy’s celebrity went mainstream many decades ago and his position as the supposed everyman of porn made him untouchable in the adult movie world. There’s already an immense stigma attached to sex workers, especially women in the business, and whorephobia’s toxicity lingers to this day. Frankly, a hell of a lot of people, including some self-described feminists, decided that women in the sex industry either ‘asked for it’ or deserve everything they got. It’s a poisonous form of misogyny that allowed Jeremy to remain at the top of his field for decades and let the rest of the world overlook years of accusations (seriously, don’t look up his name on Twitter right now because people are being predictably gross about this.)
