Adrien Brody won his second Oscar for his performance in The Brutalist. His speech was very long. Indeed, it might still be happening somewhere at one of the afterparties. He will not be played off. Amid his rambling, he thanked a lot of people and said some word salad. He even broke Greer Garson’s decades-long record for the longest-ever speech. But the most candid and perhaps revealing moment came when he thanked his partner, Georgina Chapman. You might know her best as the fashion designer behind the brand Marchesa and a regular feature of Project Runway. She’s also the ex Mrs. Harvey Weinstein.
Chapman and Brody have been together for about five or six years, give or take. Rumours of their coupling first appeared in 2019, but they didn’t make public appearances together on a regular basis until about 2023. She’s been on his arm all awards season and has been thanked frequently in his many speeches. During his Oscars one, he said:
“I share this with my amazing partner Georgina, who has not only reinvigorated my own self-worth but my sense of value and my values, and her beautiful children, Dash and India. It’s been a rollercoaster, but thank you for accepting me into your life, and Popsy’s coming home a winner.”
Yup, Adrien is the stepdad to Weinstein’s kids. He’s Popsy! Admit it, that detail is pretty cute.
It wasn’t that long ago that many wondered if Chapman would become an industry pariah. Being married to a serial rapist and bully who frequently haranged actresses into wearing Marchesa didn’t put her work or business practices in the best light. Vogue rallied around her ‘comeback’ and since then we’ve seen Marchesa back on the major red carpets. This is not to blame Chapman for the crimes of her ex-husband. We’ve no evidence that she was Amanda Palmer-ing with him or anything like that. I can’t imagine the possible chaos and dangers of being behind closed doors with that man. With Chapman’s business, however, the ways that Weinstein bullied actresses via fashion remains a hot-button issue.
As I wrote in 2020, ‘What Weinstein represents, however, is a tangled web of culpability and an attitude of complicit actions that spread far and wide, from film to journalism to, yes, fashion. One of the ways Weinstein kept women under his thumb and in a state of fear for their careers was through the clothes they wore to promote their work. Chapman benefitted from that. She shouldn’t live forever under Weinstein’s shadow, but she and the business she is a part of still have a lot of things they need to think about, in my opinion.’
From a purely personal point-of-view, I imagine it must have been hugely difficult for Chapman to move on from Weinstein and care for their kids. What’s the conversation like with two young children about their dad being a predator who’s going to die in prison? I don’t envy her that. So, good for Popsy. I hope his bedtime stories are more concise than his speeches.
And, of course, I can’t help but wonder: has Georgina been to Adrien’s castle? Does he have to buy Georgina her own castle? Do we get a full magazine spread of cheesy photos for that one? I will never drop this subject.
