Friends, Friends has been off the air for 15 years, and yet, every few months there are rumors of a reunion because for some reason, people really want to see what Monica and Chandler will be like now, as the harried parents of twin 15-year olds. Emma Geller Green should probably be graduating high school right about now, give or take a year; and Ben, Ross’ eldest, very well could be married in the Friends-world. He’s 24. I don’t know about you, but I’m not sure I want to see the core six deal with the mundane realities of parenting in the modern age, as there are many shows out there that are tackling that, and doing it better than a Friends reunion probably could. Hold that thought, though.
Anyway, Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston sat down with People to give an interview since they’re promoting Murder Mystery, and of course the ‘Friends’ reunion came up, again:
“[The fans] are excited. They’re excited whether you say ‘no,’ ‘maybe,’ or ‘yes,’ so I felt like it was fun to mix it up,” Aniston said, referencing her latest comments hinting that a revival wasn’t out of the realm of possibility.“Friends was a powerhouse,” chimed in Sandler, 52. “Everybody on Friends is excellent, everybody likes them. America, the world loves the cast. So for God’s sake, make a f—ing movie for everyone.”
“That was so mafia of you!” said Aniston, 50, with a laugh.
If you want my opinion, I think we all need to chill for about 15 more years on this. Right now, our Friends are undoubtedly dealing with child rearing (I’m sure Phoebe and Mike probably had a few kids, too) and getting them into college (you know Monica, if she had the means, would have pulled an Aunt Becky for her twins) and so naturally if the focus in their lives right now is raising their kids, the focus on the show would be too. It would take a dark turn to see Ross and Rachel still bickering on what “on a break” means, at Emma’s graduation because you know those two still can’t help themselves.
You know what wouldn’t be dark? Seeing them bicker as retirees, at a nice retirement community in Florida, ala Golden Girls. That’s why we need to wait about 10-15 years. Get the kids out of the house, have them be grown, and then revisit the cast when they’re at least 60 years old, all living together in the same community. Think of the possibilities. We could basically get a twofer with a Friends reunion and a Golden Girls reboot.
Joey ends up there because he lost all his big acting money, but still has enough to retire on. Monica and Chandler retire there because they made smart investments and no longer need to work. Ross and Rachel end up there because sadly, Judy and Jack have passed on and obviously left their entire estate to Ross and after he lost his temper one too many times with his students, was forced into early retirement. Finally, Phoebe and Mike end up in Florida because Mike is loaded and never needed to work in the first place. Shenanigans, obviously, ensue.
So, until we’re at retirement age for our Friends, I’m going to have to ask Adam Sandler, and everyone to back off because we only get one shot at a good Friends reunion, and I’m telling you, retirement community Friends would be the best Friends.
