5 Random Movies You've Never Heard Of That We're Stoked About Solely Because of the Cast

It’s a slow news day, so I screwed around on iMDB for a while. This is what I got excited about. It may or may not have also been an excuse to post photos of attractive people, because I am not above that sort of thing.

Crooked House — A movie based on the Agatha Christie novel, adapted by Julian Fellowes about an an engaged woman who holds off on marriage until the identity of the person who poisoned her grandfather is found. Your cast? Gillian Anderson, Christina Hendricks, Glenn Close, Terrence Stamp, and Max Irons, son of Jeremy.

Annihilation — This one comes from Alex Garland (28 Days Later, Ex Machina), and it’s about a biologist who signs up for a dangerous, secret expedition where the laws of nature don’t apply, whatever that means. The cast, however, is phenomenal: Natalie Portman, Oscar Isaac, Tessa Thompson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Gina Rodriguez. Holy shit.

High Wire Act/HostilesHigh Wire Act comes from Brad Anderson, the director of The Machinist. It’s about a former U.S. diplomat who returns to service in order to save a former colleague in Beirut. OK, not so interesting, but then that cast: Jon Hamm, Dean Norris, Shea Wigham, and Rosamund Pike, who we haven’t seen nearly enough of since Gone Girl. If that doesn’t satisfy your Rosamund Pike itch, maybe Scott Cooper’s (Crazy Heart) Hostiles will, because it stars Pike, Christian Bale, Ben Foster, and Jesse Plemons.

Last Flag Flying — This has completely escaped my notice, mostly because of Trump, but Richard Linklater has a new movie out this November. It’s essentially a sort-of sequel to Hal Ashby’s 1973 flick The Last Detail, a movie starring Jack Nicholson that was nominated for three Oscars and is known best for its frequent use of profanity. This sequel stars … Bryan Cranston, Steve Carell, and Laurence Fishburne, as well as J. Quinton Johnson, who currently plays Hercules Mulligan and James Madison in Hamilton.

The Favourite — I know very little about this, and I don’t typically like period pieces BUT The Favourite — which follows the political machinations behind the scenes during the reign of Queen Anne, the last monarch of the House of Stuarts — stars Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz, Nicholas Hoult, Mark Gattis, and Olivia fucking Colman as Queen Anne. Bonus: It comes from Yorgos Lanthimos, the director of The Lobster.
