There’s been a lot of news surrounding Stranger Things these past 24 hours, and none of it has been about the much-anticipated fifth and final season. First, there was the news of an animated spinoff, and now, an engagement. At 19 years old, Stranger Things star Mille Bobby Brown has already lived quite a successful career in the limelight. From her Emmy-nominated performance as Eleven on the hit Netflix series to her role as franchise lead in Enola Holmes 1 & 2, she’s cemented herself as a formidable presence. In 2023 alone she’ll be starring in the Netflix film Damsel, which she executively produced, and releasing her first novel Nineteen Steps based on her own family history. Already a lot to juggle as a 19-year-old, even a celebrity one, and to add to the schedule, she’s announced her engagement to her boyfriend Jake Bongiovi, the 20-year-old son of musician Jon Bon Jovi.
The two have been together since 2021, and the recent engagement was announced through Brown’s Instagram account. In the photo, an engagement ring is seen on her finger, and Bongiovi has seemingly confirmed the news on his Instagram as well.
Prior to Bongiovi, Brown dated musician Jacob Sartorius in 2018, and rugby player Joseph Robinson prior to that.
Brown isn’t the first star to announce a rather young engagement, but the fact that she was only 12 years old when Stranger Things premiered and we’ve watched her grow up in real time compounds that slight nauseating sensation. It’s still tough to grapple with the fact that Rupert Grint is a dad and he’s in his 30s.
Cynicism aside, here’s to the young couple. Having grown up in the spotlight and often marketed as much older than her age, Brown has handled fame with seeming grace, even while under intense scrutiny as a child star. Platitudes aside, what a grim reminder that we’re all aging at rapid speed.
