Friday’s box-office numbers are in, and it looks like Ant-Man’s second weekend will be competing with the first weekend of Adam Sandler’s Pixels for top spot at the box office, with Marvel film projected to narrowly hold on to first, despite a huge second weekend drop (which is not unusual among top-heavy Marvel films).
Ant-Man is expected to end the weekend with about $26 million, which is a decent second weekend, while Pixels $25 million is a disappointment for a film with an $88 million budget (and Sandler typically doesn’t perform well overseas, so he can’t depend on that to make up the difference).
Meanwhile, John Green’s follow-up to Fault in Our Stars, Paper Towns (review in the next hour) is expected to end the weekend with a decent $16 million, which is solid compared to the film’s $12 million budget, but a letdown compared to the $48 million opening of last summer’s Fault in Our Stars.
Finally, Jake Gyllenhaal’s Southpaw will be competing with Paper Towns and Amy Schumer’s Trainwreck (projected to get $17 million) for third, fourth, and fifth place. Southpaw is likely to open in the $15-$17 million range, which ain’t bad for a $30 million film, especially one as poorly written as Southpaw (Kurt Sutter’s dialogue is terrible but Gyllenhaal miraculously sells the hell out of it).
