There's a New Record Holder for Lowest Grossing Film in U.S. History

Jurassic World may have broken the record for the biggest opening weekend of all time a few days ago, but we now have a new record-holder in America for lowest grossing film of all time, a movie I wouldn’t have even heard of had it not been for John Oliver’s segment on the FIFA scandal a few weeks ago.

The FIFA funded United Passions — starring Gerard Depardieu, Sam Neill, and Tim Roth as outgoing FIFA president Sepp Blatte — has taken that record, confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter, by only grossing a mere $918 from 10 cinemas, despite a $17 million production budget.

The movie, which has been described by critics as “excrement,” “astonishingly crass” and “proof of corporate insanity,” has now been pulled from theaters.

However, note Zyzzyx Road starring Katherine Heigl put up only $20 at the box office in 2006, according to IMDB, and $30 according to Box Office Mojo. In fact, I note four movies with lower grosses than United Passions , and here’s 10 movies that opened with less than $1,000 in 2013 alone.

The caveat seems to be that United Passions has the lowest gross ever for a film that opened in at least 10 theaters (em> Zyzzyx Road opened in only one).
