'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Box-Office Prospects Are Seriously Being Threatened

Way back on May 21st, 1999, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace opened with — at the time — a whopping $64 million opening weekend. Nothing else was close. No one else dared to put up a legitimate threat to The Phantom Menace that weekend. In fact, the only other movie that opened that weekend, The Love Letter starring Ellen Degeneres (and Jack Black, in a minor role), mustered a meager $2.6 million.

With George Lucas having handed over the reins, however, the studios are seeing an opening. There’s a crack in the facade. Star Wars is no longer invincible. This time, Universal studios is going hard. They’re not going to lie down and let The Force Awakens have the entire weekend to itself, and they’re not throwing out some sh*tty disposable movie no one will remember a week after its release.

No. Universal is bringing out the big guns. They’re bringing out the best. They’re pitting Amy Poehler and Tina Fey against the motherfucking Force.

In Sisters, Fey and Poehler play two siblings who learn that their childhood house is about to be sold, but before the new owners can take over, they throw one last massive party in their old home. The film will also star James Brolin, Ike Barinholtz, Maya Rudolph, Madison Davenport, John Leguizamo, John Cena. Here’s your first look:

Is Poehler afraid of opening against Star Wars: The Force Awakens on December 18th, 2015? No goddamn way. She relishes the challenge:

“We said we’d only do the movie if it opened against Star Wars. We’re not scared. It’s what gets us up in the morning. We’re going to fucking crush Star Wars.”

YOU’RE DAMN RIGHT THEY ARE.

J.J. Abrams just soiled his pants.
