Dragons. Will. Train.

Given the vocal reaction to the trailer before Alice in Wonderland at the beginning of March, it comes as no surprise that How to Train Your Dragon has unseated that film as this weekend’s victor. However, despite a 4,000-screen berth and a nationwide increase in 3-D ticket prices, Dragon only took in $43.3 million (compared to DreamWorks’ own Monsters vs. Aliens, which brought in nearly $60 million at this time last year) and won’t have much room to run with Clash of the Titans snatching up screens next week, which is a shame; I think it’s got more heart than poop jokes and makes fine use of the added dimension during the flying sequences. (Our review will be up soon.)

Alice may have lost 3-D screens, but it still took in another $17.3 million on its way to a $300 million domestic gross (making it Burton’s most successful film). Third place went to the high-concept, lowbrow Hot Tub Time Machine, which may have made more than $13.6 million had anyone been left to pay for a ticket after something like five hundred promo screenings took place across the country.

The Bounty Hunter landed fourth with $12.4 million, Diary of a Wimpy Kid took fifth with $10 million, She’s Out of My League settled for sixth with $3.5 million, Green Zone ended up in seventh with $3.3 million, Shutter Island stuck around in eighth with $3.2 million, Repo Men dropped to ninth with $3 million and Our Family Wedding closed things out with $2.2 million.
