Edge of Domination

Let’s get the new old news out of the way first. Avatar claimed yet another weekend with $30 million, placing it $6 million shy of displacing Titanic on the domestic charts, just as it already has on the worldwide end of things. (This, of course, only counts if you don’t go adjusting the grosses of, say, Gone with the Wind for ticket price inflation. I’ll leave such nitpicking to others far fonder than I.)

The new number two was Edge of Darkness, Mel Gibson’s first vehicle since his DUI. Between its not-really-Taken word-of-mouth and his anti-Semitic reputation of late, its $17 million made for a decent but distinctly unspectacular opening. (Even 2002’s We Were Soldiers managed a bigger opening weekend; then again, that was before The Incident.) The new number three was When in Rome, Kristen Bell’s first vehicle since ever and a fairly wretched one at that. The rom-com may have opened bigger than this year’s Leap Year and last winter’s New in Town with $12 million, but next weekend’s Dear John looks to swoop in and claim the teen girl demo for itself.

Fourth place went to The Tooth Fairy with $10 million, fifth place went to The Book of Eli with $8.8 million, sixth place went to Legion with $6.8 million, and The Lovely Bones hung around in seventh with an additional $4.7 million raked in. Sherlock Holmes took in another $4.5 million in an effort to bring its overall domestic total that much closer to a nice round $200 million (it currently sits at $197.6m), while The Squeakquel took in another $4 million in an effort to remind Robert Downey Jr. that he can always be out-performed by a trio of singing rodents ($209.2m domestic — thanks, America).

Closing out the top ten was It’s Complicated with $3.7 million for the weekend, just enough to make it yet another $100 million grosser to Meryl’s credit. We can only hope now that she doesn’t go and fuck it all up with a pesky DUI and some adjusted grosses. People might start nitpicking, and that’d be truly complicated…
