Cannonball Read III: Trickster: An Anthropological Memoir by Eileen Kane

By idleprimate | Posted Under Book Reviews on February 26, 2011

Eileen Kane is a professional anthropologist, with the fieldwork to prove it, but she made her mark in the world educating the rest of us shmucks, not the cognoscenti. I think that was probably more valuable to us. Her memoir of her first foray into fieldwork is replete with humor, detail and wisdom. She spins the tale of a young female anthropologist venturing out with insecurity into a male dominated world, in 1964, right after her marriage, risking everything, including the cross looks from folk in her home town.

Cannonball Read III: In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto by Michael Pollan

By leuce7 | Posted Under Book Reviews on February 25, 2011

Last year, being the last year I would spend in my twenties, I decided it would be a good idea to start thinking about how to achieve an optimal me. That led to my requesting anything-advice, suggestions, ideas, etc.-that would aid me on this path to self-improvement. Thus, In Defense of Food was, quite literally, delivered into my hands.

Cannonball Read III: Boiling Mad: Inside Tea Party America by Kate Zernike

By denesteak | Posted Under Book Reviews on February 24, 2011

Late last year, I had the chance to attend a talk by Kate Zernike in which she discussed her book, Boiling Mad, with Frank Rich, the New York Times columnist, and Sam Tenenhaus, the NYT Book Review editor who is also a historian. It was extremely illuminating because Zernike had been following the Tea Party beat for the Times since it started soon after Obama's election, and she was able to give a very measured and analytical view of the Tea Partiers. This is very different from how one-note the media has been covering them, whether if it's their portrayal as uber-patriots or as a political punchline.

Cannonball Read III: Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom by Corey Doctorow

By JarekMatthews | Posted Under Book Reviews on February 23, 2011

Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom is a book I've been reading about for quite a long time. Disneyland is only a 45 minute drive for me, so once I got past the crippling fear of damn near everything that crept its way into my childhood, I became a theme park addict, especially when the Happiest Place on Earth is the park in question. While Cory Doctorow's work takes place in a nifty, futuristic Disney "World," I was drawn to the concept all the same.

Cannonball Read III: Carry Me Home by Sandra Krig

By jack | Posted Under Book Reviews on February 22, 2011

Carry Me Home takes place in 1940, in rural Wisconsin, although it could just as easily be many other places in the country. The rural community Krig creates is as lush and interesting as any community about which I've read in years. Every character leaves an impression that lingers, hanging around long after they've left the page. The rural setting combined with the not-quite-right teenage protagonist will undoubtedly result in comparisons to Faulkner. I generally hate that anything rural gets related back to Uncle William, but in this case the comparison is probably merited. Although this narrative is simpler, Krig has some bone-crushing observations via the innocence of Earwig, the teenager in question, that can't help but to put one in the mind of Benjy.
