Whoa, Take 'er Easy There, Pilgrim

Sometimes there’s just so much hype and excitement surrounding something that it’s more than a trend. In these situations I instead consider anything contrary to that hype a trend. Call it backlash, film cynicism or, in the words of the great Glenn Kenny, “concern-trolling.” Whatever, it helps curb the amount of blog quotes I include on these posts, and it usually allows me to get the obligatory Film Drunk blurb in.

Today’s concern-trolling will be applied to the trailer for Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, which you probably saw earlier when Dustin sat back and appreciated it for us. As a huge Shaun of the Dead fan, I’m anxious to see the film, which seems to have the same basic subtext (eliminate the obstacles on the road to commitment, whether they be zombies or just plain evil). But hey, this could be shitty.

Here are some people who aren’t sold on Edgar Wright’s stylish comic book adaptation yet. I call them the men who shot (down) ringer-tee valiants.

  • Vince Mancini at Film Drunk:
Oookay. Am I wrong for thinking this looks like a hipster-ier version of The Spirit? And anyway, if my girlfriend told me she had seven evil ex-boyfriends, I probably wouldn’t try to go fight them. I’d just make a scene and leave her ass settin right there in the Arby’s to think about what she done, and maybe next time not be so much of a whore.

Okay, so maybe Mancini’s alone as far as the bloggers go. So let’s reach into the comments sections of the more excited sites:

  • Ray DeRousse (okay, he’s a blogger commenting on a coworker’s post) at Obsessed with Film:
What is this “awesomeness” people are raving about in this trailer?? Are these Scott Pilgrim fanboys or something?

I know nothing about the books. The trailer doesn’t show anything that we haven’t seen a thousand times before. Even the “Ka-Pow” business was done forty years ago in the Batman television series. And, yet again, Cera is doing his wimpy spineless routine.

    What is the awesome part?

  • J at Cinematical:
Holy crap, Michael Cera is even more miscast than I originally thought. I’m either going to have to torrent this or pay for another movie then sneak into this one, because I don’t want to financially reward such a monumental miscasting and encourage people to ruin more movies with Michael Cera castings.
  • The_Floating_Skull_of_Robert_Loggia at Aint It Cool News:
This looks fucking ridiculous. No…scratch that; this looks fucking Dragonball ridiculous! Thus far, we’ve seen Wright direct funny, somewhat intimate British comedies with a fanboy-friendly slant. This looks like a live-action comic book to a fault. High camp poop that most of you would be ripping a new asshole were it not for Wright’s involvement.
  • one at First Showing:
HAHAHA…if people were not fans before the movie was made, there is no way in hell they ever will be. This looks like total crap…
  • Sean at Topless Robot:
I’m sorry, maybe it’s because I’ve never read the comic, but I just don’t see what the deal with the trailer is. I’m not hating on it; the people who’re into the comic see something I just don’t. Michael Cera seems to be playing…Michael Cera, again, and aside from that I got literally nothing from the trailer other than Dragonball-adaptation special effects. I would’ve gotten more out of the trailer if it had some character moments in it. The comic has character moments, doesn’t it?
  • RichterJet at JoBlo.com:
I don’t know why, but for some reason this trailer just doesn’t do it for me. At all. Don’t get me wrong, I love Edgar Wright and everything he’s done up til this point. I’m not stoked for it right now, but I’m not saying that this will hold me back from seeing it at some point
