Can We Talk About Carrie's Bizarre Storyline in Last Night's 'Homeland'?

Can we talk about Homeland for a minute? I know that many of you no longer watch the series, now in its seventh season, but I still like it, some weeks more than others. However, last night, Carrie Mathison’s storyline was bizarre, although not necessarily in a bad way. But maybe in a bad way. But it was definitely watchable, even engrossing.

Look: The season, in its second episode, is just now heating up. It’s basically positioning the President against the intelligence community (I wonder where that idea came from?), which essentially means Carrie vs. the President. Also, Saul has been drafted from prison to serve as the President’s National Security Advisor, which is not so much an olive branch to the intelligence community as much as it is a poke in the eye (I think Saul is playing the long game here and attempting to undermine the President from the inside).

Anyway, Carrie’s storyline last night operated mostly adjacent to the main storyline. She’s using her computer to spy on the Chief of Staff (because Carrie wants to take down the President), and she spotted a person of interest in the Chief of Staff’s house. So, what does a former CIA agent who has taken out terrorist cells do? She posts a picture of that person to an Internet bulletin board and then when someone actually responds, she clicks on his file.

What are you thinking, Carrie?

Bad move. A hacker took over her computer and held the contents for ransom. Carrie had to come up with $5,000 to retrieve the contents, or the hacker would release them to the public (and because Carrie is spying on the Chief of Staff, she’d find herself in prison for treason). So what does she do? She brings in her IT-expert friend, obviously, but he can’t unlock the computer, either. In fact, the hacker overhears Carrie’s conversation with her IT-expert friend and raises the ransom to $10,000.

Carrie, by the way, is unemployed and lives with her sister. She doesn’t have $10,000.

So, what does she do? She takes off her top and gives the hacker a little striptease.

This is not something I expect to see when I tune into Homeland.

Anyway, Carrie strings the hacker along until she’s got him all hot and bothered, and then she insists that he meet her in person, where she will offer him her body in lieu of payment.

It did not go well for the hacker. The experience began like this:

And ended like this:

“I AM CIA MOTHERFUCKER, YOU TRY ANYTHING AND I WILL HUNT YOU DOWN AND I WILL KILL YOU. I KNOW WHO YOU ARE. I GOT YOUR PRINTS. I KNOW WHERE YOU LIVE. I’VE GOT YOUR DNA. I’VE GOT YOU FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE. DO YOU HEAR ME?

I’m not going to lie: As out of character for this show as it was, I loved it. It was basically this, from The Americans:

The take-home message? Carrie recognizes that she may have some “impulse control issues.”

It’s going to be a wild season.
