Nic Cage as a Murderous Dad In Full-On 'Not the Bees!' Mode Is a Bloodthirsty Magic

Nic Cage just keeps making movies, y’all. He made 7 this year, and 5 last year, and of the 12, I’ve only seen one (Snowden) and I’ve barely heard of the rest. I’m not sure about the man’s financial acumen — keeping one’s Oscar-winning rep and making 2 decent movies a year and being paid $5 million per has to be better than making 5 movies a year at $1 million per while flushing his rep down the toilet on straight-to-VOD fare — but I respect his work ethic.

His next one is called Mom and Dad and it comes from Momentum Pictures, which may or may not be a fly-by-night money laundering front for whatever mobster outfit to whom Nic Cage is indebted. I don’t know. I also don’t care. Mom and Dad, which stars Cage and Selma Blair, looks terrifically fun, and after a long awards and holiday season, I always find myself looking forward to the unpredictable dregs of January.

This one comes from writer/director Brian Taylor (Crank, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance) and it looks like what might happen if the guy behind Crank hired Nic Cage to play some kind of psycho Dad in a world where all the parents have turned on their children. The logline is as such: A teenage girl and her little brother must survive a wild 24 hours during which a mass hysteria of unknown origins causes parents to turn violently on their own kids.

In the middle of a holiday vacation with sub-zero temperatures, during which my kids have been stuck inside with me, it’s also a storyline with which I can empathize right now. I am Nic’s Bloodthirsty Revenge.

Mom and Dad hits select theaters (two in Reseda, probably), VOD, and Digital HD on January 19th.
