From Funny to Furious to Infuriating, The Media Weighs in on Shithole Gate
As most of you know by know, earlier today, in a bipartisan meeting with lawmakers, Donald Trump referred to African countries and Haiti as “shitholes,” which has created a bizarre environment where we can now turn on the television — or even listen to NPR — and hear the word “shithole,” unbleeped. So, thanks for that, Trump.
There’s been a range of responses, but I’ll give you just three: Fox News, expectedly, defended the President. Here’s The Five on Trump’s comment:
“If you are in a bar in Wisconsin and you are thinking they are bringing in a bunch of Haiti people or El Salvadorians [sic] or people from Niger, this is how some people talk,” he continued. “Is it graceful? No. Is it polite or delicate? Absolutely not. Is it a little offensive? Of course it is. But you know what? This doesn’t move the needle at all. This is how Trump is. He doesn’t care. He shoots from the hip. And if he offends some people, fine.”
For the funny, here’s Seth Meyers, who turns exasperation into humor:
The best response, however, comes from Anderson Cooper on CNN, who calls it was it is. “It’s not racial. It’s not racially charged. It is racist.”
Due to his reporting on Harvey Weinstein, Ronan Farrow had to move houses because he was being stalked. Hopefully, Jon Lovett offered him a place to stay. I’m imagining the two of them eating breakfast with Pundit sitting nearby, being quiet like the angel dog he is. (Celebitchy)

Did you read Johann Hari’s post in The Guardian about depression? I’m a big fan of his, so I enjoyed his article. This is a response, and while it disagrees with Hari on certain claims, it’s also a good read. (The Cut)

Black Raven loves books for kids, particularly fiction. Linda Skeers’ Women Who Dared: 52 Stories Of Fearless Daredevils, Adventurers, and Rebels was fun enough that she didn’t mind that it was non-fiction. You probably haven’t heard of a lot of these women, women from all over the world who have done daring things. Would you like to be known as a daredevil, an adventurer, or a rebel? (Cannonball Read 10)
