Golden Globe Nominations Mean Nothing

The Golden Globes has a checkered history with some very suspicious nominations. Take, for instance, Jennifer Love Hewitt’s nomination for The Client List. Or what about nominating Piper Perabo for best actress for her role in Covert Affairs. or Scott Caan as best supporting actor for his role in Hawaii Five-0? Or how about nominating Burlesque for best comedy/musical? Or Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie’s The Tourist for the same category?

The funny thing is: All of the above nominations came in a single year, 2010, otherwise known as the year that I completely stopped valuing what the Golden Globes had to say. And yet, for as long as I can remember, the two movie awards shows that people actually care about every year are the Oscars and the Golden Globes.

Granted, the Golden Globes do tend to be the more amusing of the awards shows because of all the boozing, because it used to run without a host, and because Tina Fey and Amy Poehler have hosted in past years (and will do so again this Sunday night). But aside from the boozy atmosphere, the Golden Globes are kind of useless as an indicator of what is actually worthy of awards — the omission of I May Destroy You this year, for instance, may have been one of the more egregious oversights in GG history.

There’s a reason, however, that I May Destroy You might have been overlooked, and that is because, among the 90 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press, there are reportedly zero (0) Black people, which might further explain why Delroy Lindo was snubbed, as well, for his role in Da 5 Bloods. From The L.A. Times:

While the HFPA’s ranks include a number of people of color, there are no Black members, a fact a representative

says the group is aware of and is “committed to addressing.”

The organization drew widespread criticism for this year’s slate of nominations, which did not include any of this year’s Black-led potential Oscar best picture contenders, including “Da 5 Bloods,” “Judas and the Black Messiah” and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” among its finalists for the group’s top film prize.

This controversy comes on the heels of another, in which Netflix’s terrible series Emily In Paris received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Comedy, but only after 30 Golden Globe voters were treated to a set visit that included “a two-night stay at the five-star Peninsula Paris hotel, where rooms currently start at about $1,400 a night, and a news conference and lunch at the Musée des Arts Forains, a private museum filled with amusement rides dating to 1850 where the show was shooting.”

Wow. This may also explain why The Tourist, shot in Paris and Venice, also got its GG nomination.
